Iconic London Bus gets Redesign

Iconic London Bus gets Redesign, Media Lightbox Blog

The iconic London Routemaster bus is finally getting a redesign. The idea of the much loved red, reliable Routemaster had been conceived back in the 50′s. The Routemaster saw continuous service in London until 2005, and currently remains on two heritage routes in central London.

In December 2007, UK magazine Autocar commissioned leading bus designer Capoco, designer of the innovative Optare Solo, to come up with a proposal for a new-generation Routemaster. Mayor of London, Boris Johnson backed the principle of the design. He decided to hold a competition for the final design. The winners included two joint ‘whole bus’ designs, one submitted by Capoco, and one submitted by Aston Martin and Foster and Partners.

The image below is a digital mock-up of how the bus will look on the street.

The New Bus for London will meet London Buses’ requirements for vehicles in public service in London, including high standards of accessibility, safety and emissions abatement. In addition, it will be more durable, more fuel efficient and better ventilated.

The bus will be lighter than other buses, will produce 40% less CO2 emissions than before and will feature three doors with two staircases. The open hop-on/hop off platform at the back have been criticized in the previous Routemaster, for being too exposed to the elements. In the new design, this section can be closed off, giving the bus more of a “coach” feel if required and maximizing potential uses for the future of the bus.

The new 87-seater is a revolution in vehicle design, prompting an inspiring, fun and more environmentally friendly journey through one of the world’s most iconic cities. The new buses are due to be completed by 2012. What do you think of the new bus? Were they wrong to mess with the design of a classic? Let us know in the comments!
