Netflix is streaming software that provides unlimited Films & TV episodes to all users for £5.99 per month. Instantly watch unlimited films & TV episodes streamed over the Internet to your TV via a PS3, Wii, Xbox 360 or any other device that streams from Netflix.

You can try this service completely free of charge for 1 month. If you enjoy it, do nothing and Netflix take care of the rest, they will automatically continue your membership for as long as you choose to remain a member. The membership is a month-to-month subscription that begins at sign-up. It is extremely easy to cancel your membership at any time online 24 hours a day. Another great fact is that there are no cancellation fees again showing the confidence Netflix have in their service, although there appears to be no refunds for partial months.

There are currently more than 20 million streaming members globally. Netflix have risen to be the leading online subscription service streaming films & TV episodes over the Internet. Members can instantly watch unlimited films & TV episodes streamed to their TVs and computers. There is a great selection of media on offer, including hundreds of films and TV episodes available to watch instantly on TV via a PS3, Wii, Xbox 360, Smartphones, Tablets and computers.

For a great price of £5.99 a month, you get unlimited films & TV episodes instantly over the Internet to your TV or computer. There seems to be no commercials, and you can pause, rewind, fast forward or watch again as often as you like (depending on Internet speed!). Another confident move from Netflix is providing a free app for iPhone and iPad as well as Android or Windows phone and tablets. Simply download and log straight in to your account. However only one of all the devices listed above can be watched at one time on your Netflix account.

Netflix claim to have instant streaming on all their shows and films, which is true. In reality though the speed of your broadband Internet speed will determine how fast you can access the Films and TV episodes Netflix have to offer. The content is streamed over the Internet, so you don’t have to wait for them to download. Unlike Spotify there are no commercials and you can pause, rewind or fast forward as often as you like.

Netflix offer 3 video quality settings to help you manage your data usage: Good (up to 0.3 GB/hour), Better (up to 0.7 GB/hour) and Best (about 1.0 GB/hour but up to 2.3 GB/hour when streaming HD content). The default setting is “Good” and you can change the setting any time you want – your price will remain just £5.99 a month. Netflix streams a little bit of data as a buffer each time you start a film or TV programme. Frequently starting and stopping films and TV programmes will result in a small increase to the amount of data Netflix streams to you per hour. In most cases this will be less than a few minutes’ worth. You may find it helpful if you check with your Internet provider or mobile carrier for information on possible Internet data usage charges.

I recently read the book ‘Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man’ by Marshall McLuhan. This great book brought the message of ‘it’s not about the media’s content, but rather how the characteristics of the media itself are conveyed’. McLuhan’s insight was that a medium affects the society in which it plays a role in not by the content delivered over the medium, but by its characteristics of the medium itself. The medium in itself should be the focus of study not the content that is carried on it.

A prime example McLuhan used what a light bulb, ‘a Light bulb does not have content in the way that a newspaper has articles or a television has programs, it is a medium that has a social effect i.e. a light bulb enables people to create spaces during night time that would otherwise be enveloped by darkness’. He describes a light bulb as a medium without any content. His most controversial point on the subject of mediums was his belief of content having little effect on society, in other words, it did not matter if television broadcasts children’s shows or violent programming the effect of televisions on society would be identical.

The book is in fact the source of the well-known phrase ‘The medium is the message’. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would highly recommend to any media enthusiast.
You can find the book on Amazon and similar sites; also I found an interesting part of the book discussed on YouTube, shown below.

Microsoft recently released a short video on how they see the near future regarding the technology they produce which is extremely interesting, at first glance the video almost appears totally unbelievable, how when taking everything into consideration it may be much closer than first thought.

When watching this video at first I didn’t believe a thing. So much of the video shows what look like digital panels in pretty much all areas in everyday life. They look a lot like the tablets we have today. My first thoughts were ‘this is completely ridiculous’ however I then took a few minutes to think about how many leaps in technology we have experienced in the last year even not to mention the colossal leaps in the last 10.

My conclusion is that the tech shown in this video may be much closer than first thought, see what you think, have a watch.

App of the day! This blog is about the great exciting app “Tiny Wings.” Get downloading only 69p on the app store today.

App of the day is….. YES its tiny wings, it’s given this name because you control a rather plump bird that is a bit short in the wing department and therefore needs help in order to help him/ her fly. This app game almost exclusively consists of hills and by using only one touch control to fold your wings, this then gains speed on the downhill sections, and from this launch yourself into the air on the uphill section.

The HIGHER you fly the MORE points you gain.

More points can be had by collecting tokens along the way, and there are lots of nice achievements to be had, 27 in total. Island graphics change daily and each island has its own unique look. There’s a nice touch in the fact you are continually being chased by the night, so it’s bit of a race against time; once darkness falls its game over

The game is similar to other apps on the Iphone app store such as Canabalt, when reviewing it, I found that this app is more enjoyable and has a lot more features included throughout it. It has some nice touches and one being that the ready window which pops up; rather than hurling you straight back into the action if your game play has been interrupted for say, a low battery warning etc.

Tiny Wings is a classy little title and it is well worth the money for download, so get downloading now for only 69p.

Depending on who you ask about the on going battle between Android and Apple you will get a different answer. Apple just released iOS 5, the newest version of its wildly popular mobile operating system, and now Google has let the cat out of the bag on Android 4.0 (‘Ice Cream Sandwich’) and a brand spanking new Samsung Galaxy Nexus. This blog will go into the facts and figures of each to help you make your mind up on which one will do the job for you!

Appearance
In the past the user interface has been familiarized with that of ‘Tron’ in its sleek futuristic approach. Thought up and designed by Matias Duarte, it seems for Android 4.0 it has its vast share of glowing blues, deep blacks and a brand new modern font called Roboto. There have been resizable widgets added into the mix making it much easier to make the phone use multiple functions without having to open an app.
Apple’s brand new iOS 5 has not introduced much on the way of visual redesign, but then again why try to fix what hasn’t been broken, apple’s award winning formula didn’t really need to be changed. One of the main features added was pull down notifications system which is highly useful to the iOS user. Apple however admittedly took it’s inspiration from Android. It seems that Android has the upper hand here, whilst iOS 5 doesn’t do anything badly, it seems though that it can’t match up to the bright flashy new design of Android 4.0.

Syncing software
Apple have banged on about iCloud for so long that most of us know it all quite well enough now what it does. It copies your downloads to the cloud and syncs iTunes downloads like apps, music and photos and automatically syncs them across other iDevices that run iOS5. Former MobileMe users now get the service for free and can now get access to email/contact and calendar syncing.
Intergration with the cloud has always been a strong move for Google, it is very easy to see how their vast suite of software services are quite handy on Android compared to iOS. Apps like Gmail offer a much more in depth approach with Android 4.0, Google have even implemented an offline email search (last 30 days) which is a very smart useful touch, making things simpler and smoother. It seems that both iOS5 and Android 4.0 are an equal match here, it seems that if you are the type of user who loves iTunes and MobileMe Apple is the way forward, but for more Gmail/Calendar users Android is the way.

Features from the Future
Siri vs Android Beam and Face unlock
Both devices have a futuristic touch onboard. Apple have introduced Siri, a voice command and search app that is quite highly advanced, being able to understand not only questions but the context too, things like weather forcasts, text dictation and random information are not a problem when it comes to asking Siri. You can basically speak to your iPhone 4S and ask Siri whatever you want and Siri, the humble servant will give you the information you need (in most cases).
Android introduces two little bonus features Android Beam and Face unlock. If you have ever used the clever app Bump to swap phone numbers, Beam is basically the exact same idea, but again far more comprehensive. You can tap two phones together and watch on with a shocked look as the phones will exchange Websites, Videos, Directions, and apps, it’s quite remarkable.
Face Unlock for Android 4.0 is a pretty nifty trick proving quite useful in securing your phone, because its easy to look over at your mate typing in a pin code, and quite easily replicate it, however when it comes to replicating a face, that’s a different story. The phone can now be unlocked by simply peering into the front facing camera and having your face recognised. However there could be a lack in security if your friend has a picture of the user, which will in some cases let them into the phone. The clear winner in this field has to be the iPhone 4S’s Siri; despite both handsets have a futuristic approach. Though the Achilles heel to Siri is that is that it is completely limited to the 4S and not open to any iOS 5 carrier, where as the Beam feature will be available on any new Android 4.0 handset.

Conclusion
Whilst the iPhone 4S is no iPhone 5, it’s no pushover either, the phone isn’t radically redesigned, again is doesn’t need to be, people will buy it regardless. It does have a decent boost in speed thanks to the A5 processor, an even better 8MP camera, and then there’s Siri behind the wheel, and the winning design and retina display introduced with the last generation iPhone.
Depsite the vast amount of different Android phones currently available, the clear leader will be the Samsung Nexus, due the be released next month, it will be the first and only phone to date running Android 4.0 which gives it a huge advantage in the Android world.

Samsung Nexus Specs
• 4.65 Super AMOLED screen
• 1.2 Ghz dual-core processor
• Support for 4G LTE
• Silver-thin 9mm thickness
• Curved design that makes it feel natural to hold
• Android 4.0
• NFC
However despite Androids best efforts the winning vote must go to Apple’s iPhone 4S. In terms of screen quality, speed, and design, these two phones are clearly the very higher class of the mobile world. They’re very nearly equally matched, but the Galaxy Nexus does have a few tricks up its sleeve, with the ability to connect to true 4G network. The iPhone 4S is a better fit for the average buyer. The flagship Android phone’s huge screen will be great for multimedia, but at a whopping 4.65″, it’s just plain too big to have the same broad appeal as a more everyday device.
Now that Apple has snagged (and refined) some of Android’s killer features like voice commands and the drop-down notification window, the iPhone is more of a force to be reckoned with than ever. The Galaxy Nexus is an extremely powerful phone, but there will (hopefully) soon be many more Android 4.0 devices floating around, and none can stay on top for long. For its broad appeal and refined operating system, this round goes to the one and only iPhone.

Below is a video on each Handset, enjoy.

The current market for tablets has been controlled easily with Apple’s iPad, and the public have been counting the days for a worthy competitor to be released to start and mix things up a bit. The H-P Touch-pad tried and failed with others such as the Galaxy Tab trying to follow suite adding their bit. But no one seems to have even knocked the slightest bit of confidence from the iPad. The Kindle Fire however………

It looks like the best chance that any company has at this minute in time is Amazon with their brand new ‘Kindle Fire’ with their very interesting attitude of bringing the current niche E-reader market into the mainstream market with everyone else thus appealing to a much wider target audience.

Here is everything you need to know.

Device?

The kindle Fire has a 7 inch colour display, this being less than the iPad’s 9.7 inches, by comparison the Fire holds its own. It runs a version of Android OS that has been fully customized for effectiveness and functionality. This means that the Fire has access to all Android apps, It does not have 3G connectivity like some versions of the iPad, also there are no cameras so video conferencing is not an option.

What does it do?

The Fire lets the user have access to basically all of Amazon’s features, they have even created their very own Android app store. If you are a subscriber to Amazon Prime (Annual Membership of £49) you can have instant streaming access to Amazon’s ever growing library of all forms of multimedia, this also includes free cloud storage for all amazon content, including as many Mp3’s As you wish of course all available directly from Amazon.

New Browser?

‘Silk’ is the name of Amazons very own browser that was made to feature in the Fire. The exciting thing about it is ‘split browsing’ which means the cloud computing is a major aspect, you don’t have to depend on the devices processing power all the time, as the name suggests, the processing can be split with Amazon’s cloud computing. This means web pages load much quicker because Amazon’s computers are sharing the workload.

Price?

The Fire upon release the will retail around $200 (no price has currently been released for the UK ) which is significantly cheaper than we first thought and also much cheaper than the iPad, This shows Amazon have worked out a way to keep production efficient and maintain low production costs, Amazon will no doubt disrupt the current tablet market with prices as competitive as this. The release date of this lil beauty is November 15th, so stay tuned in.

Have a look at a hands on with the Fire below.

If you want a fast, easy & secure way to store your files, check out MediaLightBox.com’s file storage where you can use features such as our large file transfer to collaborate on or share your files – get a FREE account today!
